THE Penguino FOUNDATION

Penguino’s Mission
Our mission is to support literacy.

We do this with a range of simple apps that introduce pre-readers to the written form of the words already in their vocabulary, including baby language and the proper nouns unique to each family.

The Penguin method is fun for early readers while also engaging parents and educators.

Literacy in the United States is on the decline having already lost the gains from the last half of the 20th century. With your help we can reverse this trend in a generation by starting with the very young, and tackling those that have slipped through the cracks.

Initially developed for toddlers, the Penguino approach produces results for all classes of early and pre-reading, including young children, later remedial reading, adult literacy, rehabilitation and second language learning.

You can support our mission in several ways:

PENGUINO - PRE-READING

Penguino’s simple method needs a reader for setting up and initial instruction. Once set up, students, including the very young, can use the app independently. Set up is a simple process meaning that one teacher can easily support a classroom of mixed ability students. The Penguino feature roadmap includes scaled deployment so that an administrator can support thousands of students for situations with a common vocabulary.

Literacy
Full Prose Adult Literacy in the United States was never high (less than 20%) and is unfortunately now going down. Full Prose includes complex reading such as business and government forms. More recent figures reveal a trend that, if it is allowed to continue, will produce a population that can barely read.

Many countries run long-term literacy tests and these are most revealing with the cellphone age now undermining reading competency in all first-world digital cultures. The two main metrics in the US are Basic Prose Proficiency and Full Prose Proficiency, with 2003 figures of 86% and 13% respectively. Sadly, on the basis of SAT Reading, these figures have seen substantial decreases through 2015.

From Washington Post. Full article here:
"Literacy experts and educators say they are stunned by the results of a recent adult literacy assessment, which shows that the reading proficiency of college graduates has declined in the past decade, with no obvious explanation."

From Wikipedia:
"Full prose proficiency,[41] as measured by the ability to process complex and challenging material such as would be encountered in everyday life, is achieved by about 13% of the general, 17% of the white, and 2% of the African American population.[42][43] However 86% of the general population had basic or higher prose proficiency as of 2003, with a decrease distributed across all groups in the full proficiency group vs. 1992 of more than 10% consistent with trends, observed results in the SAT reading score to the present (2015).[44][45]"

From Washington Post. Full article here:
"Reading scores on the SAT for the high school class of 2012 reached a four-decade low, putting a punctuation mark on a gradual decline in the ability of college-bound teens to read passages and answer questions about sentence structure, vocabulary and meaning on the college entrance exam."

Comparative Literacy
Literacy is particularly difficult to quantify and most countries have their own methods and criteria. The situation is further complicated by vastly different writing systems in languages such as Mandarin, Arabic and Hindi. These problems make comparisons between countries largely meaningless.
